This morning at 3:41 am I woke up to my bed shaking and rumbling. It took me a few seconds to figure out exactly what was happening until my husbands surf board fell from the rafters above smacking down on the tile floor. Whoops he was not happy, I told him not to put his surf board there.
The epic-center of this earthquake occurred near the Island of Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean side of Panama which is a 3.5 hour drive, one boarder crossing, 30 minute taxi ride, then a 25 minute flight to some great surf! The earthquake measuring a 5.7 on the Richter scale, took place 7 miles off the coast, which is perhaps why this quake shook me out of bed. Authorities in Costa Rica and Panama stated no reports of injuries or damages due to the earthquake, only everybody in this region got a “jolt out of bed!”
Throughout Central America there are many active volcanic areas, which is why frequent earthquakes happen here.
